COSMO BAKER One of the top DJ's on the PLANET. Truth.
I met Cosmo Baker back at the 2009 Winter Music Conference, and the moment I knew this was one bionic being was when we started freestylin... science styles. Cosmo was stoked to geek out with me as I
rapped about Orca’s, and I was blown away by his ability to outdo my dorsal fin dance move. Needless to say, I have been incredibly
partial towards his cosmic ways since. Now, it's your turn to understand why this Philadelphia native, who cut his chops alongside contemporaries such as ?uestlove and Rich Medina, is known for his uncanny ability to move a crowd. This internationally acclaimed DJ puts his all into his immediate interactions, because he knows it's the little things that count - those microcosmic representations of the cosmos at large!
1. What is your “Inspired Purpose” - how do you hope to influence the world?
- I've never really give too much thought as to how I would personally change the world, you know. I have the belief that if you start small, so your best to make the things that immediately surround you, there will be a ripple effect and that little pocket touches everything else around it and so on and so on. But I'm definitely inspired to share my love of music and in a bigger sense, art and life, with people in general. I'm lucky that I'm in a position where I can actually reach a pretty vast amount of people. And so if I get an opportunity to affect one person, hopefully that person will take that and then send that energy back out to the world in their own way.
2. What fills you with abundant enthusiasm and how have you used this to drive your professional pursuits?
- I don't think anyone knows where "the muse" comes from but we all have our own muse and mine directs me to make people move and connect to the energy around them through the music I give out. That's such an incredible feeling, knowing that you're connecting with someone in such a profound way though art, so how could one NOT be enthused about that. And my passion for what I do makes me better at what I do, and more enabled to do it, and that's a wonderful cycle that keeps on going. Like when i connect with a dancefloor, they feel my energy. That energy is refracted back in a sense towards me, and together we create something absolutely beautiful.
3. Have their been risks involved and how have you moved beyond your fears?
- Oh sure there have been risks and fears in all of this. It's extremely risky to say that you want to do something that's not necessarily conventional as an occupation, and to then actually go out and do it. I don't even think that I've "made it" but I do pretty well for myself, and for everyone that's "made it" there's millions that have tried and failed. But I could never imagine being one of those people that didn't ever try in the first place. And it's all a matter of self-conviction I think. Of course anyone will be afraid if they're going to be getting up in front of a crowd of 500 people, or try 5,000 people! But you just have to know that what you're doing is coming from a deeper place inside of you, and just "do you." The realness shines through no matter what.
4. How do your inspirations connect you with nature?
- Well I'm a city kid born and bred but obviously every single person on this planet has a divine connection with nature even if they don't fully comprehend it. But to me, someone who loves the hustle and bustle of the city life, there's nothing like sitting in a park for a few hours and "turning off" or going on vacation to the beach for a week or so. To me it's kind of like hitting the giant "reset button" of life. I always return to my everyday life completely energized.
5. When do you feel most empowered?
- I would be lying if I said it wasn't empowering to see thousands of people moving to what you're doing on stage or in the booth. It's an incredible rush and connection. But at the same time I feel just as empowered, perhaps in a different but not a lesser sense, when I do something that enriches the life of those that I love around me. Like installing a toaster over in your kitchen - that's some empowering shit!
